Icons on the right-end of the bookmarks toolbar now indicate the Important/Read-Later
status of a page. The same icons allow pages to be bookmarked and marked
Important/Read-Later with just one click.
-
Context menus for menu items
Bookmark and history menu items now display a context menu with actions
pertaining to that item. For instance, you can clear a history entry or remove
a bookmark by using the context menu. This functionality extends to the
saved-search menu popups in the bookmarks toolbar as well.
-
Last browser tab close
Categorize now allows the last tab in a browser window to be closed. On last tab
close Categorize opens a fresh tab. This is a departure from the standard
Firefox behavior which closes a window if the last tab in a window is closed.
This release adds support for Firefox 3.5.
This release is an extensive update and contains numerous new features
and bug fixes. The biggest addition is a new bookmarks toolbar and a searchbar.
-
Categorize Bookmarks Toolbar
Categorize now has a Bookmarks Toolbar. The Categorize Toolbar provides quick access to
bookmarks, and groups. Additionally, it offers quick querying of bookmarks and
history via saved searches. The Categorize Bookmarks Toolbar also adds icons for
convenient access to sidebars.
-
Categorize Searchbar
The Categorize searchbar is designed as a replacement for the Firefox searchbar. It allows
one click access to multiple search engines and adds a search history to the searchbar.
-
Enhanced drag and drop support
Categorize now supports vastly enhanced drag and drop operations. Tabs can now be dragged and
dropped onto the groups sidebar. The groups menu can be rearranged via drag and drop and groups
can be dragged to the Categorize Bookmarks Toolbar. Even the Categorize searchbar has extensive
support for drag operations and search engines can be added and rearranged via drag and drop.
-
Storage of favorite icons
Categorize now saves bookmarks favorite icons in its database.
-
View update and selection
Numerous bug related to view update and selection have been fixed.
-
Tab selection
A bug that caused incorrect tab selection on tab close has been fixed.
-
Category statistics
Category statistics in the category autocomplete popup are now correct.
In this release, most of the focus is on sidebar functionality. The
user-interface for switching between sidebars has been completely overhauled.
The old sidebar menu has been reorganized and a toolbar for single-click
switching between sidebars has been added.
-
Customizable sidebar header toolbar
Categorize now supports a toolbar for quickly switching sidebars. The toolbar
is customizable so completely different icons can be displayed for right
and left sidebar panes.
-
Reorganized sidebar menu
The sidebar menu in the sidebar pane header has been reorganized. Most menu
items now display icons and several new sidebars have been added.
-
Search indicator icon
Sidebars specific to Categorize now sport a search status indicator icon. The
icon appears once the user types a search query or filters the sidebar by
clicking a column header icon, etc. The icon can be clicked to clear the search and
restore the sidebar to an unfiltered view.
-
Linux/unix compatibility bug
Previous versions contained a bug related to file permissions which prevented the
extension from working on Linux/unix platforms. That bug has been fixed in this
release.
The biggest change in this release is the name. The old name, Bookmarks
Plus, has been retired in favor of Categorize. I was never happy with the old
name as it lacked originality and suggested an addon that complemented
existing bookmarking functionality of Firefox. However, the scope of this addon
is much bigger: it is intended to be an alternative bookmarking system for
Firefox. I believe the name categorize more aptly describes what this
addon is about.
There are very many changes in this release, but most are invisible to the
user. The user interface is mostly unchanged from the last release. Some people
maybe disappointed by this, but some core issues needed to be taken care of
before I could focus on user interface issues. The usability problems reported
by reviewers will be tackled in future releases.
-
Site-specific keywords
Site specific keywords are one of the most useful features
of Categorize. They allow quick navigation and searching of web-sites. Actually, they were
part of previous releases as well but were completely undocumented.
-
Recently used category auto-completion
Now you can type a space in a blank category textbox to pull up a list of
recently used categories
in the auto-complete popup.
-
Favorite icon support
Earlier releases of Categorize did not support favorite icons in the Bookmarks Menu.
This release displays favorite icons for bookmarks in the Bookmarks Menu.
-
Predefined item administration interface
The predefined bookmarks, groups, and keywords that came preloaded with
earlier releases of Categorize are now optional. Additionally, all predefined items
can now be deleted/readded using the Administrative Tasks submenu of the Bookmarks Menu.
-
Bookmark Imports
The user’s bookmarks created before the installation of Categorize can now be imported.
After import the old bookmarks are treated like other bookmarks created using Categorize.
Previously such bookmarks could only be accessed via the Bookmarks Menu and did not show
in the Bookmarks Sidebar.
-
Automated Backups
For enhanced safety of the user’s data, Categorize now automatically creates backups of
the user’s bookmarks periodically.
-
Compatibility issues with various sidebar extensions
There was a silly bug in extension releases prior to 0.84 that prevented some
extensions from adding enhancements to sidebars. All In One Sidebar, and
Mr Tech Toolkit were reported by users as being impacted; however, it probably
affected many other extensions as well. The bug has been fixed in this release.
-
Compatibility issues with All In One Sidebar
Previous releases of the Categorize did not work well with the popular All In One Sidebar
extension. This release fixes all known compatibility issues with the All In One Sidebar
extension.
-
Old bookmark dialog on History Sidebar item bookmark
Previous releases of the Categorize opened an incorrect bookmark add dialog on the invocation
of a History Sidebar item bookmark command. This release fixes that bug.
